Why we built this · A true story
One garden. One will. Five generations.
Land
A garden bought freedom.
Enoch George Howard was born enslaved in Montgomery County, Maryland. He kept a vegetable garden, sold what he grew, and bought his freedom, his wife's, and his children's. Then he bought the very land he had been forced to work.
Paper
A will held it together.
He wrote a will and had it recorded in the county books. That page kept the land in the family, helped fund a Black-owned newspaper, and educated generations of Black women.
